Did you know that Biogradska Gora is the first National Park in Montenegro?

Going back to the 19th century, you meet King Nikola Petrović. He worked on preserving this area so future generations could enjoy its beauty. Before, this area was called “king’s shelter” and has been under state protection ever since. Later, in 1952 the Park became a National Park. After that, from 1977, it also became under UNESCO protection within the (MAB) – Man and the Biosphere Programme.

Believe it or not, Biogradska Gora is the smallest of all five Montenegro national parks. Yet, it has some of the most beautiful flora and fauna diversity. In this natural paradise, you can find 26 different habitats of plants and 220 unique plants. On top of that, you can admire 150 kinds of birds. Then, ten kinds of mammals live in Biogradska Gora National Park and its magical forest. The forest is the story for itself – it has 86 kinds of trees! Imagine that! Experts say that 20% of these trees are endemic to the terrific Balkan Peninsula. The most common tree types here are spruce, fir trees, and beech. Most of these trees are as old as 500 years and more than 50 meters tall – giants!

Biogradska Gora National Park offers 54 km2 of stunning nature. Come here to admire six terrific, clear glacial lakes but also high mountain tops and slopes, then centennial forests, and green pastures together with clear streams.

Indeed, the most popular attraction in this fairy-tale area is Biograd lake, located on mount Bjelasica, 1.094 meters above sea level. The surface of this clear lake Biograd has the reflection of the blue-green colors of the mystical forests. People who come here come primarily for this beyond-words lake.

Besides lake Biograd, you can admire beautiful Sisko, Mali Sisko, Pesica, Ursulovacko, and Sevarina glacial lakes. The beforementioned lakes make Biogradska Gora National Park Montenegro’s Pearl for a reason! The beauty of these lakes is breathtaking. It will not leave you disappointed, that is for sure!
