1. Serbia has five national parks: Djerdap, Kopaonik, Shar Planina, Tara, and Fruska Gora.

- Kopaonik National Park

Kopaonik became a national park in 1981. It covers around 11,810 hectares which means it is huge for you to explore. On Kopaonik you will encounter plenty of endemic species. That fact makes Kopaonik one of the most important natural sites in Serbia. Come to Kopanik and explore 11 nature reserves and 26 natural monuments. Besides, twelve geomorphological, six geological, eight hydrological, and fifteen buildings are classified here as immovable cultural property!

To see Shar Mountain, you shall visit the southern part of Kosovo and the northwestern part of Northern Macedonia. Shar Planina is one of the most important protected areas in the central Balkans! It is a spectacular place for all nature and outdoor lovers! Why? Here is why – it has more than 1,500 vascular plant species, of which about 20% are endemic and relics of the Balkans.

So here is what you probably did not know: Tara is the deepest canyon in Europe and the second deepest canyon in the world.

With a depth of up to 1333 meters, this canyon is imposing and scary at the same time. People call this UNESCO site – A tear of Europe. To fully experience it, try rafting on the Tara river.

Fruska Gora is a spectacular mountain located in Vojvodina and one of the most developed tourist destinations in the country. 8. Obedska bara is the first protected area in Europe. Also, it is the second in the world since 1874, just two years after the proclamation of the first Yellowstone National Park in the USA.

Obedska bara is a special nature reserve that covers an area of ​​9,820 hectares. This place is home to more than 30 different aquatic, wetlands, and forests. It has a rich fauna: 220 bird species, 50 species of mammals, 13 species of amphibians, 11 species of reptiles, and 16 species of fish. But also, there is the rich flora with even 500 species of plants, 180 species of fungi, and 50 species of mosses. Indeed, this is one of the richest and best-preserved wild habitats in the Pannonian Plain. You definitely should visit it!

9. Deliblato sandstone is the biggest continental sandstone in Europe.

I bet this is one of the most surprising things you didn’t know about Serbia! Deliblato sandstone, or Deliblatska peščara in Serbian, is a one-of-a-kind desert in the middle of Europe! Come to Serbia, the Northwest, and feel the soft sand that is 12,000 years old! The European Sahara is a natural wonder created by the wind that brought the sand.

10. Sjenica city - also known as Serbian Siberia, is the coldest inhabited place in Europe, with a recorded minimum temperature of -39 degrees Celsius.

11. In western Serbia, there is the second deepest canyon in Europe - Drina.
